Living Water

When Jesus went to the Samaritan village of Sychar, he went to offer the living water to the Samaritan woman and to the people of the Samaritan village (John 4:42). Jesus said to the samaritan woman - 'If you only knew the gift God has for you and who I am, you would ask me, and I would give you living water' (John 4:10). This living water which Jesus is offering is the Holy Spirit.

These verses are in the Bible for us to learn that Jesus offers the living water - Holy Spirit to those who ask him. It is applicable not only to the samaritan people but to us as well. To know that Gift of Holy Spirit is for us from God and Jesus and we have to ask for Holy Spirit - Living water. In John 4:13 Jesus explains us that by drinking wordly water people become thirsty again but the living water he gives takes away thirst altogether. It becomes a perpetual spring within people that gives them eternal life. Holy Spirit doesn't get finished like wordly water that people become thirsty again after consumption.

Holy Spirit gives Holy life i.e Heavenly life. Heavenly life is a Holy life -> Life without sin. Life without sin is life without any disobedience to God. This means life in obedience to God. And we are born sinners so we cannot live sinless life by ourself. We need something beyond us to give that life. That is what God promises to give us - Holy Spirit that gives us new life and strength to live a Holy life. Like a baby born by humans cannot live by itself. First it needs humans to get born and it needs help beyond itself (from his parents or people around him) to give him food, water, nourishment to sustain and grow in life. Similarly we need a new life from God and nourishment from God - His Spirit - Holy Spirit. Jesus said in John 3:6 'Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives new life from heaven'.

Jesus said that the Holy Spirit gives eternal life. Without getting born again - new birth by the Holy Spirit one cannot enter the Kingdom of God. In John 3:5 Jesus said to Nicodemus 'The truth is no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit'. Born of water symbolises getting cleansed from sins, repentance - forgiveness of past sins, cleaned (purified) and born of Spirit is getting a new heavenly life from the Holy Spirit, ability and strength to live a holy life. With this Jesus explains that we can enter the Kingdom of God.

I hope that the reader has got a bit clarity on this topic and is blessed by understanding the above passage.

God bless you!
