How should I live my life as a Christian? Where to start?

As a Christian we must keep everyday God as the center of our life.

• Every morning – Pray to God and invite him in your life.
• Pray to God to fill you with Holy Spirit. Stay holy and kill the indwelling sinful nature which is in us. We must kill sin daily as we can’t serve both God and Mammon (Devil).
• Once you have started following God, you cannot turn back to your old life, to your old ways of living. You have to sacrifice your old life to live the new life. Jesus said - No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
• Expand God’s Kingdom. Share his love and his word. Have a sacrificial love.

Invite God everyday morning in your life, to fill your mind and heart with his presence, with his Holy Spirit. When we invite God with sincere heart and humility, God comes into our life, we get a renewed mind and a new heart from him. Our thoughts change. Earlier without God you would think about worldly aspirations – New Job, New House, New car, Savings account planning, Planning vacation to beautiful places, Competition with your peers etc but when God enters, his spirit changes our aspirations. Now our aspirations grow from God, aspiring for God’s kingdom and with a quest to grow his kingdom. You get desire to pray and study his word, you get desire to preach his word, you get desire to bring people to God and to his love. You fall in love with God and of course God’s love is already there.

Jesus said – Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all the rest will be added to you. Jesus told us to prioritize God first. To make God as the center of our life and God will give us all our needs everyday. Jesus said – Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet they are so beautiful that even Solomon (the richest man ever on Earth) in all his glory was not as well dressed beautifully as these lilies are. God made the lilies grow and be beautiful. If God cares so wonderfully about flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won’t he more care about you? O you of little faith! (Matthew 6:28-30).
So seek God everyday morning. When you wake up, pray and invite God into your life, to take control of your mind and heart. Let your thoughts be from God. He will give you his thoughts and direct you in your life. We surrender our life to him and make him lead us. Then we see how wonderful our life becomes. We get joy, peace, and satisfaction in our life. We manifest the kingdom of God in our life.

Kingdom of God is like a small mustard seed. But when it grows and becomes the largest of the garden plant into a tree the birds come and find shelter in its branches. Similarly, when you invite God and God enters in your life, he establishes his Kingdom in you which is very small at first but God grows you and his kingdom grows in you so much that he makes you great and others are blessed by your life. You give others shelter and care and they receive fruits from you.

Jesus said you cannot serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and Mammon (Devil) together. In order to grow in God we must reject Mammon and evil habits. We must kill the sin (evil) in us. We have to sacrifice, crucify our sinful desires in order to grow in God’s holiness. So when we come to God we have to come with a firm decision that we are going to serve him and him only and have to reject devil, have to reject what devil wants us to do i.e to commit sin. And how do we get strength to reject our sins – By the Spirit of God - Holy Spirit. Holy spirit is like a fire which burns the evil desires in us and purifies us.

So as a Christian daily killing sin is a must activity. Without killing sin, you cannot have fellowship with God, you cannot grow in God. Theologian John Owen said ‘Kill sin daily or the sin will kill you’.

Jesus said - No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God (Luke 9:62). Once one has decided to follow God and live the new life - Holy life obeying God, he cannot go back to his old life of sin. In old life if he had sinful habit of alcoholic drinking or pornography or deeds of lust or greed or jealousy or any sinful act, after coming to Christ - getting born again in the Spirit of Christ - baptised with the Holy Spirit, he has to sacrifice his previous life. In new life he cannot go back to his old ways of living and doing sinful acts. He has to crucify his old life of sin to live the new life in Christ. He has to humbly pray to God as Jesus taught – ‘Lord lead me not into temptation but deliver me from evil’. When you sincerely ask God he will deliver you from sins. By the power of Holy Spirit, you will get strength in holiness and God will deliver you from sin.

Moving to the last part, Jesus commanded his disciples ‘Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creation’ (Mark 16:15). We have to become partakers in expanding the kingdom of God, we have to share his word and love to everyone. It is not an option but a command by God. We have to study bible daily, invite God to help us understand his word, listen to the people of God who are inspired by holy spirit and then share it to others so that they can also come to God and grow in him.
